In this project I worked on the recipes which we decided to include in the flier- these recipes were meant to be both easy and budget friendly. Coming at it through this angle, I was able to develop a series of recipes (with the best chosen in the end) which I felt reflected these goals, improving my professional skills as this is directly related to my course. Whilst the development of the recipes was fun for me as a creative challenge, going into Rainbow Junktion with Kate to see the daily routines for the chefs and volunteers really helped show me the sense of community in the food bank. Seeing this I genuinely felt so appreciative for community initiatives such as this. Working within a team where not the entire group was STEM based also was a new opportunity for me as well. Seeing Kate work in a journalistic capacity was so refreshing to see, and has helped me to see how a beneficial interview should be conducted (helping me in my job also).

Throughout working on the EDI project with Rainbow Junktion, I have learned so much about the importance of community. While interviewing people at the food bank, taking photos, and observing volunteers going about their days, I have appreciated the power of community, caring for each other, and making a difference. Whether it is a volunteer telling me that Rainbow Junktion has “changed their life” or a cook in the kitchen describing how she creates her recipe, each story at Rainbow Junktion is a part of something bigger— a shared goal of caring for the community and including everyone. I have not only gained practical skills though this project, such as teamwork, communication, and management skills, but also the ability to recognise the significance of keeping a welcoming space for diversity.

Working on the EDI: Rainbow Junktion project has been a transformative experience for me. It not only honed my technical skills in media and communications but also deepened my understanding of effective teamwork and community engagement. Beyond the practical lessons, the project allowed me to contribute to a cause that I am passionate about, reinforcing the impact of community service and the importance of supporting local initiatives. Overall, this project has enriched my professional skills and my personal growth, emphasising the significance of empathy, resilience, and collective effort in achieving meaningful outcomes.Rainbow Junktion is a phenomenal organisation, and I am extremely grateful that the AHC and EDI teams were able to support us to support them.
